“Each one has her own factor” was the slogan of an old commercial for SPF cream that marked my childhood, and today we could say “Each one has her own makeup”, because it’s totally normal that 20-, 40- and 60-year olds don’t use the same products, and the colours have a completely different effect. I would just like to add that we don’t need much in the summer anyway, but the fact remains that women like makeup and if it’s part of our routine, it’s difficult to let go of it. I know I feel lost without mascara, and the eyebrows play an important part, so I always keep at least three products handy, which ensure that I feel put together: mascara, lip gloss and perfume. It may be a matter of habit, but that’s just the way it is. Michele Magnani, the head of makeup at MAC, believes that women should only follow a few rules to always look flawless, even under an umbrella on the beach. I am more than happy to share these rules with you.
Summer makeup at 20. Less is more, is the mantra here. A piece of advice: take care of your skin and if you happen to have some spots, go to a skin professional, because they will be able to help you the most; and stay away from concealer and heavy foundation, because they will only make the skin suffer even more. It’s perfectly normal that hormones play their part at this age. So play around with glittery glosses in every colour, even the wild ones. Lip polish is a new thing, it’s somewhere between a gloss and lipstick, but lasts longer, so you don’t need as many applications and the pigment is very intense. Don’t forget your sunscreen and some mascara ‒ it should be dark and high quality, and all the better, if it’s waterproof. In the evening: liquid terra or bronzer, just enough to give your skin a sun kissed glow; the fact that these products cover any redness is a plus, but they aren’t as useful in the daytime, because they don’t have SPF.
Summer makeup at 40. You should also keep it natural. Use SPF 30, apply a bit of eyeliner, black pencil (all the better if it’s a gel liner) and mascara. If you prefer colours, try colourful pencils for the lower eyelid (neon colours are in) and colourful lipsticks (but everything should match), so coral, salmon, apricot, jasmine. In the evening: terra or bronzer, but you should mind that the final effect isn’t matte! Allow your skin to shimmer slightly, because the golden shimmer is in and it emphasises the look of healthy, nourished skin. Similar is true for hands and bust area, let it shimmer!
Summer makeup at 60. Never, ever forget the lipstick! And that’s it … You can try every possible colour at the beach, even the ones that are on the wild side, from bright to dark red. Line the lips and then slowly, carefully apply the lipstick. You don’t need anything else except for quality sun protection. In the evening: Don’t forget the cheeks! Go for creamy stick blush, because it has a bit of shimmer, and keep the colour focused on apricots and pinks ‒ but not too much, it should all be quite discreet.
And a final word of advice to everyone. Don’t go to the beach without a pedicure and nail polish. There are no rules as far as colours go, the only important thing is that the nail polish is there! And if you’re a fashion aficionada, you should know that the latest trend is coming straight from Miami and it’s all about a perfect contrast: so, one colour on your hands and its total contrast on your feet. Do you dare? I am so looking forward to it!
