Some trends give you the feeling that they are pretty much useless, perhaps you even see them as outdated, but as time goes by, you slowly get used to them, take them for your own, even fall head over heels over them. I felt this way about velvet: it reminded me of music school concerts when I was about ten and I had a velvet skirt “for special occasions”; sort of like the velvet hair bow, although I wanted to wear that every single day. But in those days, we all had to make the most with what we had, so there was a clear distinction between an every day and a special occasion. At least that’s what it was like in my home.

When I see the velvet wave today, I want to embrace it all. The dresses and blazers first, followed by the ribbed velvet pants and, of course, lots and lots of velvet hair ribbons. The only piece I found a bit over the top, was a velvet underwear set‒I prefer lace. This fall brings with it velvet in classical colours, which we’ve had the pleasure of introduction last year: dark green, electric blue, powder, golden, burgundy, and the eternal black. There are some other shades, but these are the once we cannot do without. I’ve been eyeing a new velvet Yves San Laurent bag the past couple of days, and I get the feeling I’m going through with the crazy purchase, because I’ve become so obsessed I started dreaming about it. Don’t ask me, what the price is, because you don’t want to know. And neither do I.

What I love about velvet is that it doesn’t cringe. When I travel and I know that I’m going to need a dress, I take a velvet one, because I can fold it and when I take it out of the suitcase, it’s as good as new. It takes up no space at all, which makes it perfect for hand luggage and it’s always ready to wear. Even makeup follows the velvet trend: burgundy lips and matching nail polish, blue shades of mascara or green eye shadows; they all follow the trend and to me it seems that beauty wants to imply daring or extravagant choices, kept within the boundaries of elegance, of course.

We cannot go past accessories, because they’re all velvet, even bags, sandals, hair bands, belts, hats and so on. This full-blown plush mania isn’t going anywhere and I suspect it will still be here in 2018. Velvet goes great with jeans or leather, it also looks amazing worn individually, and it seems formal. I bought a suit after a really long time, it’s black velvet and I can tell you it feels like a soft embrace.
