The way to wear the most comfortable pants of the moment

Culottes, a simple divided skirt may be a bit different than the ones our mothers used to wear. Culottes have made an important statement this summer, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they’re still in. They require you to follow some rules, since it’s not the most traditional garment, and the first one is: you should definitely wear stilettos. Given their wide and short cut, they tend to look out of proportion if you wear them with a puffy jacket and ballet flats; all the femininity is lost that way. Rule Nr. 2: don’t wear them if you are a plus size, because they visually widen you, especially the calves.

Without a doubt, their greatest advantage is their convenience: they’re so comfy you may never want to take them off; and they look really good in combination with romantic lace blouses. Choose classical colours ‒ black, brown, grey and beige ‒ and play around with the top instead, for instance a cropped leather jacket. Their wideness demands a tight top and a limited amount of volume to prevent you from losing your own shape in the outfit. You should keep your waist line the focal point with the help of a narrow belt, your bag should be small, and the material should not crease too much. Culottes are a good choice for being a part of your business wardrobe, because they will make you look polished, but not already seen many times and boring. Quite the opposite: culottes bring a welcome fresh and updated look.

I had my doubts, but in the end I treated myself to a floral, a white and a lace version. I admit I stopped at the summer models, but I am tempted by the black and camel colour ones. I choose to wear them with ankle boots or classical pointed stilettos. The key to wearing culottes is your footwear because it’s very exposed. Even though the cut is wide, they can be seen in combination with loose knitwear and pullovers, which really don’t look bad; Victoria Beckham makes it look super chic and nonchalant despite the shoes that defy gravity. A matter of taste, I suppose.
