Graceful Story

Wonderful, timeless style icons as mothers

Photo: Lost Production

This is an article I dedicate to my mother, because she is in a way my style icon, and a woman who has had a great influence on my life. Not only did she bring me into this world and made sure I am what I am today, but she was always there, like a steady shadow that you sense and know it will always be around. She was there when I needed her and I hope with all my heart it will stay so for a long time. I also hope I get to be as amazing a mother to my Sofia, as my mother was to me.

I chose some timeless style icons for you today, who are also mothers, caught in intimate moments in their lives in the photographs that follow. I will conclude with Princess Kate, who is old enough, or young enough to become the next timeless icon. I adore her style, as you well know, and I believe we all have a lot to learn from her fashion compromises. A big hug to you all, my dear readers and mothers.

Audrey Hepburn

It was most difficult to find some of her pictures, because she was so discreet and shy that there are very few of them around. And yet … Audrey was charming in every respect, she left a significant mark on fashion and made sure that women got something more: that androgyny, mixed with femininity, and the super short haircut when we’ve had enough of everything. Thank you, Audrey.

Grace Kelly

So graceful, Hermes decided to dedicate a bag to her; one that remains a must-have for every fashion aficionada (… who also needs to have deep pockets, I’m afraid). An actress, Princess and mother, often photographed in her personal life, and definitely another soul who left us too early.

Jackie Kennedy

There are so many stories and tell-tales about this woman and many of them have turned into myths. An example of a woman who spent her life looking for happiness, and an example of the fact that money and power don’t necessarily come hand-in-hand with love. Still, in her private love, she was, above all, a mother and the pictures that show us these moments are completely natural, which is what makes them so wonderful.

Lady Diana

I was on Maldives, when Lady D had died. I remember the moment as if it were yesterday. Together with the locals, we sat in front of the only TV at the reception of the hotel, waiting for the story and hoping she survived. The rest is history. I loved her sincerely and I still feel today that she was a good person and a woman who had suffered a lot. I hope she found her peace and that she is happy, at last.

And the rest …

But, you know, every mother is wonderful in her own way, and these are especially beautiful, because they knew how to make the most out of fashion in a way that made sure we all fell in love with their outfits and accessories. Other than that my opinion remains the same: pregnancy is an amazing thing and an extra reason to be beautiful. Mostly to ourselves.

And Kate

Like I’ve said, I’m going to end with her, because I adore her.
