To me, my workplace is very important, because it’s an environment in which I create, and that’s why I pay attention to cleanliness, color scheme and organization. I try to keep things tidy, because I always feel that chaos brings more chaos, so it’s good to organize things. I know, sometimes we get lost in all the paper, we look for clips or pencils, business cards and documents…We lose time and above all, we get nervous. I thinkI’m a special case, because I can’t even write an article, if there are dirty dishes in the sink, because disorder bothers me even from a distance. Ever since my daughter was born, the idea of “neat and tidy” has changed, of course, I’m losing grip and it’s scary, but still…Here is some advice on how to organize and make your workplace and desk more beautiful.
Cleanliness and flowers
Make sure your desk is clean, because dust is the worst, just as a dirty keyboard or computer screen. At work, these are the details that bother me most, followed by people who keep leaving empty plastic cups everywhere, as though they thought there are elves picking up after them. There are also those who eat salami sandwiches over the keyboard, so there are grease stains and even bits of food stuck in there…What I’m trying to say is, try to keep food away from electronics and if you don’t work alone, think of other people using them. Flowers make everything more elegant and fresh; it doesn’t matter, whether they’re faux or fresh, because today’s faux flowers look just as beautiful as the real deal, but they need less care. Still, mind the dust!
Colors
Colors are a big factor, when it comes to our wellbeing, so the color of the walls in your office actually matters: lighter colors are best, because they have a soothing effect. Every office probably has a picture on the wall and it’s okay to change it every now and then. It’s nice, if the space has a personal note, sometimes even a nice fountain pen or notepad is enough, perhaps an agenda or a pencil case box…Little things give a touch of glamour and say a lot about you.
Decluttering
Just like your wardrobe closet, your desk is a place where clutter is created. Admit it, you still keep all those tiny bits of pencils that you never write with anymore, and the dry flowers and maybe even confetti from a wedding a lifetime ago. Throw it all away, my darlings, because it’s just useless clutter you don’t need and it often makes your work more difficult, even if you don’t realize it.
Inspiration
I’m a big fan of vision boards, where you hang all the things we dream of. Postcards, nice pictures, quotes, things for the soul. They say that if you admire them every day and feel as though you already have them, you get them, they find their way into your life. Write down your goals and put them on the board. Aim high, very high. You don’t want to know what I keep on my vision board…if I think about that house in that place, I start smiling, because I’ve gotten used to it and I can just see myself there.
Boxes, folders and file folders
Sort everything and put it in the closet. This way you’ll be able to find everything much quicker and you won’t get the blues. I’m the worst when it comes to documents and I prefer someone else keeping tabs. They get me down, I don’t like numbers, much less contracts…I’m a creative soul, so it’s all too much, but it has to be dealt with. That’s life and we all have to deal with things we don’t like; and not only in the workplace, right?
Something from home
Like a coffee mug, because your coffee will taste better that way. Keep your rituals alive: home baked cookies, some fruit, a chocolate bar. Something to sooth you and anchor you when you’re not in the best mood and need a hug, which is nowhere in sight. We can do a lot by ourselves, so get innovative, try out your own ideas, we’re women, after all!

While keeping track of time, staying on top of appointments, and following up with plans, it’s nice to get a little creative with it. There are so many fun calendars out there — from Lego calendars, to different geometric shapes, to famous paintings, to Origami you can scatter all across your cubicle — there’s really no creative limit. Some of my favorite calendars are the ones that give you something to look forward to each day with a positive message, a little fortune, or a goal and/or challenge to set for yourself for a specific day. You know, like when it comes to a day that tells you to “treat yo’self,” you can then justify every nonsense purchase and extra roll of sushi you order that day because, well, the calendar said you could. You’re welcome.
Personalizing your space and surrounding yourself with things that make you happy and inspire you will surely help you amp up that productivity.
Whether it’s your dream job or not, decorating your office desk can be a way of getting through the day at a 9 to 5 day job. Good tips and good feed.
