My dear readers, summer is almost here and, depending on where you live, the weather these days has been really bad. Of course we are all optimistic and home to find some nice days and sunny sky as soon as possibile. But before summer comes there are some important things you have to know. Cleaning and taking care of your closet is vital, so before you put in it your new (or old) summer clothes consider these facts.
Put it on your calendar. Depending on the state of your closet, you may need 2-5 hours or more. Clear the day, hire a sitter, unplug and make it important. Then empty your closet. Yes, the whole thing. Completely empty.
Clean and use some perfume
Clean everything, use some perfume, take care of the surfaces and when everything is brilliant and as new, put you stuff inside. So yes, again, you really need to have your closet completely empty and I know you are scared.
I know, it’s hard to do it, but you really have to throw or give away some stuff. In my can I can say that the quantity of clothes and accessorises I have to declutter is really big. It is not easy to choose, but I have to, otherwise there will be no space for my new things. And, before you give away the old stuff, here we are with seven crucial questions:
- Do I love it?
- Do I wear it?
- Does it project the image I want to project?
- Does it itch or scratch?
- Does it pinch my toes? Are the heels too high to walk in?
- Is it moldy? Smelly? Stained?
- Does it fit?
Number 3 is the real “light bulb” question for many people. Even if you love it, do you want to wear it in front of other people? As I always say, be a brutal critic. If necessary, enlist a friend who feels comfortable enough to tell you if something is wrong for you. Closet space is limited so don’t waste your prime real estate on something you’re not crazy about.
Try to fix things and clothes that are not perfect
You have to check every piece and take care of it before you put it in the closet. So check if there is a missing button, a zip which is not working, if heels are ok, the material is still as new. No matter the reason for it, giving your closet some attention will make your daily life simpler. It can be the perfect jump-start to organizing the rest of your home.
Clean and wash everything
It helps a lot. You will find out that the new, fresh smell of everything is something you really want. People tend to believe that delicates like silk and cashmere need to be shipped off to the dry cleaners. But you can care for your sensuous silky items at home, just as you can with your delicate wool. So, use a delicate shampoo!
Find some nice, big, new boxes
You really need some big, good boxes. This is where you put items that you cannot part with but do not need on a regular basis. Make an inventory of the items as you box them. Group similar items together. Remember one good way to clean out closets is to store out of season clothing. Get rid of old clothing even if it’s the size you used to be and hope to return to.
