Waiting for the Blue

American colour company Pantone has chosen “universal favourite” Classic Blue, or Pantone 19-4052, as its colour of the year for 2020. Announced 4 December, the Classic Blue colour is described by Pantone as “a reassuring presence instilling calm, confidence and connection”.

It’s also an intuitively inclusive colour. Blues are the most universally embraced colour family, because we can all relate to them. And we can’t ignore the fact that the fashion industry’s powerhouses Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Bethany Williams, Givenchy and Gucci are already incorporating Classic Blue into their SS20 collections, exerting a soothing influence over the street style set.

Colour expresses how we feel and this particular blue captures our desire for calm, dependability, stability and constancy, as we are nervous about entering the next decade. We want to feel secure and welcomed. 2020’s shade brings a sense of peace and tranquillity to the human spirit, offering refuge.
