The world of lingerie is now reminiscent of the 90’s, a decision with which designers celebrate feminism and set forth a different view of femininity. Two main guidelines prevail in 2018: on the one hand, there’s undergarments that remind back to the past decade with a sense of the 90’s, which makes it a sort of an apploud to feminism in the hands of a new generation of young women. A graphic style is emphasized, which allows young sophisticated beauty to shine through, and it’s immersed in a concept of not having gender, and androgyny. The undergarments are contemporary and do not restrict movement. Graphic patterns play a big part and they can either be quite subdued or rather loud. We could call the other guideline luxurious, because it draws inspiration from lavish boudoirs, so there are corsets, garters and garter belts in a prestigious version. A rich color palette offers powder tones, which are intertwined with graphic and digital prints, translucency and layering. Hide-reveal effect is trendy, as well as sophisticated ornamental trimmings and brocaded prints. The minimalist and subdued trend is based on a refined elegance with an original contemporary twist. There are bras, panties, garter belts and bodies. Since small details reveal style, it makes sense to follow fashion in lingerie as well. What’s hidden underneath the clothes is important and can oftentimes influence our mood.
A trend that has been present for awhile now is lingerie as day wear (just think of pajamas or the slip-dress), but we still don’t pay enough attention to it. Romantic sets will mark 2018; bra cups and panty sides are adorned with lace and floral embroideries. Tulle panels transform bodies into an item of day wear, which combines great with a longer pencil skirt or bell-bottom pants. Some brands offer truly sultry bondage models with straps wrapping around the body, creating new symmetries. Colors include black, burgundy and a rosy nude, which is not as distinct, but still a lot of fun.
There are two kinds of people in the world: there are ones who are satisfied with ordinary underwear while others prefer luxurious lingerie. This is why fashion houses that specialize in the latter ensure that their products are high quality, they use prestigious materials and pay a great deal of attention to details and appliqués, such as lace or tiny stones in the decorations. Luxurious lingerie is meant for women, who want to be sensual, attractive and appealing. Women don’t do this for men, but rather for themselves. A man doesn’t even notice the underwear, especially if he is fueled by hormones. And we’re about to end this stereotype once and for all: women don’t buy lingerie to please men, but because we feel and have the right to be beautiful, alluring and to like what we see, when we look in a mirror. The important thing is to feel relaxed in our undergarments and for them to emphasize our curves.
In a world that revolves around men, a belief holds that women choose lingerie, because they want to seduce and conquer. Unfortunately, many women think this way. But men aren’t the only reason for our existence. Women don’t do enough for themselves. It’s perfectly fine to be the centre of attention every once in awhile. Look at buying lingerie as a treat for yourself, a loving relationship with yourself, just as though you went to get your hair done or a manicure, depilation or buying a new dress. Our lingerie is a reflection of our inner well-being. When we’re not calm, we take random pieces out of the drawer and don’t coordinate the bra with the panties. When it’s PMS time and we seem ugly, fat and bloated to ourselves, so it’s hard even to look in the mirror, we’re able to put the granny-panties on: you know, the high-waist, cotton ones with the stretched-out elastic band.
On the other hand, when we’re carefree and satisfied, when we’ve fought the battle against our worst enemy, ourselves, and we love ourselves again, the desire to like ourselves increases again, so we put more effort into grooming, starting with some beautiful lingerie. It can be lacey, colorful or monochrome, sultry or girly, lavish or basic, what matters most is that we feel good wearing it. Even if others don’t see it, we know we’re wearing it and it makes us more confident. Let’s not fool ourselves, we all know the effect lingerie can have on men (especially under the influence of hormones), but don’t buy it to please them. Buy it to spoil yourself.
