Graceful Story

How to dress to impress

It may be true that fashion does not make a person, but an outfit is far from being the last thing we notice about someone. If it were any different, we could go to a job interview in tights or work behind the counter with clients in our sweatpants. I’m pleased that  it isn’t so and our society pays attention to aesthetics and style, because these two factors are the first milestones on the way to success, at least at first impression.  So what do we wear, when we want to make a statementimpression or have to attend a special occasion? There are some rules, but most importantly, we have to be confident and feel good in our own skin. It’s no use wearing an expensive dress, if it’s too short, too tight, or we just don’t feel right wearing it. Opt for safe pieces and save trial and error for a less risky situation.

Not just the dress, your body language matters as well

As a psychologist, I know a bit about it and I take any opportunity to analyze it, not just in others, but my own as well. The way we move, talk, walk, look around, give awaymuch more than you may think. It reveals things that are not very public and usually show bits of our inner self and the things we hold inside us. It’s impossible to control everything, of course, we’d be robots otherwise, but it’s still best not to cross your arms, not to have a fleeting look, and women aren’t supposed to play with their hair or lean in too much toward the person you’re speaking to.

Which colors to wear

It’s better that theybe subdued, not too loud. Black is an always trendy must, but nevertheless try beige, white, dark blue, and pastels. Don’t skimp on your footwear; your everyday shoes are not appropriate for important business meetings and that’s that. Similar is true for your bag. I often see a beautiful woman wearing a bag made of cloth that looks ancient and has definitely seen better days … I know how it is, I’m stuck in the 90’s with my Invicta backpacks, but the world has changed, so it’s a no; just like platform ballet flats or strangeheels‒only appropriate for a summer theatre night in the countryside.

About jewelry

I realize we all probably love our jewelry, but it’s good to be moderate and mind what we put on.Don’t mix metals, because it’s not elegant, and mind that the stones are in harmony with the outfit. If you like statement pieces, that’s fine, but only wear one at a time. You wouldn’t want to look like a traveling Christmas tree, which may be an okay choice for when you go out with your girlfriends, but an important meeting or job interview is another story altogether. Pearls are a timeless classic, so is white gold with white stones.

Keep your look your own

Try not to pretend and just be who you are; that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t make that extra effort. Don’t be too sure you know everything and you’re the best‒while I’m all for confidence, it has to be moderate and I don’t like people who always grab all the attention just because they’re so loud or “funny” and think the world revolves around them. So stick to moderation and keep in mind to not make the same mistake with your outfit. For instance, it’s a proven fact that women wearing red are a threat to other women, so if you have a meeting with a team, where the gentler sex will be present, avoid wearing red.
