What to wear, if you aren’t tall

Today, I’m answering a question I got from my reader Tina, who asked for a very specific advice, here’s what she wrote: “I’m 35 years old and 5 feet 2, I like wearing heals, but not every single day. I wear petite clothes and I’m struggling to find the right items to wear. At the same time, I would like to know, if there are pieces out there, that are suitable for my height.” Of course there are, all you have to do is follow a few guidelines, which are easy to adopt, which means good results are easy to achieve.

Mind the shoes

Not only the height of the heels, because it’s clear that high heels make you look taller. The biggest problem becomes obvious right about now, in the cold season, when boots and ankle booties are trendy, whereas you can not wear any model that cuts you off at the ankle. And that is exactly the reason why: it visually cuts your legs and makes them look shorter. Similar is true for strappy evening sandals, they’re not your best friend; basically any shoe that ends at or reaches your ankles, are not suitable for women of shorter stature.

Wide-leg pants

I know they’re the rage right now, but they visually shorten you, so I would advise against them. Your ideal model is a straight cut or boot cut, if you’re looking at jeans, and a higher waist is preferable. This will always make your legs seem longer. It’s not that hard to find this model, but still, the pant legs shouldn’t be wide; I’m not trying to say that shorter women should only wear skinny pants, but remember that there is a wide array od models in between skinny and wide.

Mid-calf skirts

It’s also called the elongated midi, which, again, cuts your legs, so it’s not appropriate for you. Even with high heels, this model simply isn’t suitable for shorter women. Instead, opt for a knee-length high waist pencil skirt and style it with basic pumps, because they always work.

Crop and Capri pants

Again, it’s a firm no. In the summertime, especially, women are biased to wearing flat sandals, which unfortunatelly turn into real catastrophe in combination with these types of trousers. Even if you’re Giselle, you end up with shorter legs, so just say No, thanks. Your pants should reach your ankles in a straight cut, the shorter models really aren’t your speed.

Suits and sets

Color blocking is a good solution, because it elongates you, while patterns aren’t the best pick. We could generally say that it’s better to opt for monochromatic pieces, because they make you look taller, which, of course, is a good thing. Another thing to keep in mind are stripes‒they only make sense, if they’re vertical, but the downside is they can all too soon start looking like pajamas, so it’s worth reconsidering.

Large bags

A large bag can be practical, but it won’t work, if you’re not tall. Opt for smaller and medium sized models instead, they’re trendy anyways. Another trick is to coordinate your shoes and bag by choosing the same pattern or shade, or at least a similar one.

Belts

It’s great that you wear them, but they cannot overpower you. They’re not too elegant, anyways, so opt for more delicate models. It’s good to emphasize the waist, but not at every cost. A slim model in red, for instance, will spice up your entire look, so it’s always an excellent choice.
