Let your hair get exciting with the spring/ summer 2019 hair accessories! While headbands are usually associated with youthful hairstyles, this year was different, with a ton of mature and fashion-forward takes on this hair accessory. Do you love them? I still can’t decide! They obviously need a very nice face, clean and glowing skin, nice ears and some courage as well. They can be very big and eclectic or a little bit more elegant, maybe in velvet, tartan, with a small bow, flowers, stones and whatever else you would like to wear on the top of your head.
The trend started at Prada and I saw all this colourful and huge headbands during Milan fashion week. The fashionistas were wearing them on the streets; the hair stylist for Prada, Guido, described them as ‘60s-inspired but also futuristic. He used the headbands to hide and shorten the bangs, which gave a boyish effect to the face. For extra spunk, check out the studded leather headbands. If you think this trend is just for young girls and you don’t feel comfortable with big accessories, then you can try normal pins. Traditionally, bobby pins are meant to be used without being seen, as they work from the inside to hold complex hairdos together. This is why they give a rough, undone feel to a look when they are used visibly. This makes them some of the edgy spring/ summer 2019 hair accessories. Of course you can try many different versions, not just the plain and simple one, but also the ones with glitter, small stones, flowers.
The spring/summer 2019 collections varied from headband to headband, with Prada channeling all things retro, Dior staying minimal and Simone Rocha inspiring our Christmas party looks with the most statement of headwear. Many influencers have tapped into the trend, and now recently, the royals – who prove that the accessory works for special occasions just as well as everyday. Even princess Kate, who is always so lovely, is wearing a velvet version of the headband, which is of course very sophisticated. The volume of the headband is just as important as the material when it comes to this trend. Take inspiration from the Duchess of Cambridge’s Jane Taylor velvet headband with its dramatic height.
Shades of warm orange, teals and classic black look stylish in thicker bands and give your outfit an edge. A velvet finish also works well in this style; the perfect way to opt for something a little different this party season. Are you ready?
