Even if I am in love with fashion and trends, there are styles that I really don’t like. I think fashion should be a vehicle to make every woman nice and gorgeous, not to make her look ridiculous or older. The oversized fashion trend is coming back and I have to admit that I have my own doubts. Ok, maybe it’s a metter of personal taste, but I can’t find one single picture on the net with a mode looking gorgeous with an oversized blazer, which is actually a hot trend. Right now these blazers are everywhere and even if fashionistas are suggesting them as “something to wear right now”, I don’t agree.
Celebrities and style insiders alike have been taking conventionally ugly outfits and have celebrated their offbeat aesthetic. After all, fashion should really be about what makes you feel good and feel confident. So my message is: if you feel it, then wear it! The fact is there are more ugly fashion trends rocking, as for example the super ugly sandals, the boiler suit, or the giant shoulders. Everything is fine until you see yourself nice and cool, otherwise don’t choose it. If you go into any thrift store, you will ultimately wind up finding hundreds of blouses and blazers with thick shoulder pads. In the past, you might have snipped these off but I dare you to reconsider this time. Power shoulders are making their way back into the scene. Oversized again.
Under the influence of Hedi Slimane at Dior Homme and later Saint Laurent, men’s wardrobes were shrink-wrapped around the mid-2000s. It was all muscle shirts, slimline tailoring and indie bands in skinny-fit everything. But in recent years, the fashion pendulum had swung back. The oversized trend might be big right now, but it’s not something for all occasions. I’m not convinced it works as eveningwear which is usually the most formal of occasions. Purposefully oversized pieces provide the additional structure you need to avoid looking like all your clothes have stretched on the hanger which just looks scruffy.
As with any statement trend, it’s important to avoid the temptation to go crashing in with all the grace of a reversing dump truck without any tyres on. This style works best when you dip your toes in gently at first.
