Fashion has never been just about fabric, cuts, or trends. What we wear is our second skin – a powerful form of non-verbal communication that shapes not only how others perceive us, but also how we see ourselves. Colors and clothes act like psychological tools: they can shift our posture, transform our energy, and amplify our self-awareness in an instant. An outfit is never “just an outfit” – it’s a statement of identity, confidence, and presence. With this in mind, I conducted a study with 50 women aged 40 to 58, coming from Slovenia, Italy, and the USA. My goal was to explore how fashion – and particularly the choice of colors – impacts their sense of success, confidence, and inner strength.

The participants answered a 20-question survey, and the results revealed a surprisingly consistent and insightful pattern.

The Questionnaire
- How much does clothing influence your daily self-confidence?
- Do you often choose colors according to your mood?
- Which colors do you associate with personal power?
- Which colors do you wear most often in professional settings?
- Which colors do you avoid during important occasions?
- Do you think color influences how others perceive you?
- Have you ever received compliments related to the color you wore?
- Do you wear red when you want to feel strong or confident?
- Do you consider black to be a symbol of elegance?
- Do you use navy blue to project seriousness?
- Do you see dark gray as a professional color?
- Which color makes you feel the most feminine?
- Which color makes you feel the most authoritative?
- Do you feel safer in vibrant tones or neutral ones?
- Do you think black can also create distance?
- Which color would you choose for a job interview?
- Which color would you choose for an important presentation?
- How often do you use colors to express your personality?
- Do you believe colors are a silent yet powerful language?
- Write three words that describe how you feel when you wear your favorite colors.
Results of My Study
The answers confirmed one strong message: women perceive colors not just as aesthetics, but as instruments of power and self-awareness.
- Red (72%): associated with passion and action. Women wear it when they want to project energy, strength, and boldness.
- Black (88%): the most cited color, connected to elegance, authority, and mystery. Many described it as their “secret weapon.”
- Navy Blue (64%): the color of stability and professionalism, often chosen in business contexts.
- Dark Gray (48%): valued for its sobriety and formality, less impactful but appreciated in official settings.

Focus on Black
Black emerged as the most fascinating and controversial color. According to the women in my study, black is linked to:
- Authority (78%)

- Sophistication (71%)
But it can also evoke:
- Intimidation (32%)

Black is not just a color – it’s an identity statement. Used strategically, it strengthens presence and confidence; when overused, it can create coldness and detachment.

Conclusion
