There is something sacred about Samhain. Something that cannot be fully explained, only felt. As the world grows quieter and the last leaves surrender to the earth, I feel called to turn inward, to listen to the whispers of my soul, and to remember the woman I am beneath all the layers the world has placed upon me.
For me, Samhain is more than the turning of the seasons. It is a homecoming.
Rooted in ancient Gaelic traditions, Samhain marks the threshold between the lighter half of the year and the darkness of winter. It is traditionally associated with the end of the harvest, the beginning of winter, and a time when the boundary between this world and the Otherworld was believed to grow thin. Today, many witches honour Samhain as a sacred time for remembering ancestors, reflecting on mortality, releasing the old, and welcoming transformation. And perhaps this is why it speaks so deeply to me. Because I, too, am made of seasons. I have known the warmth of becoming, the ache of letting go, and the quiet beauty of finding myself again after everything I thought I was has fallen away.
To be a witch, for me, is to honour that truth. It is to recognise the sacred in the ordinary, to trust my intuition, to find wisdom in the moon and the changing earth, and to understand that my power does not need to be loud to be real. It lives in my boundaries, in my tenderness, in my ability to rise after sorrow, and in the courage to choose myself without guilt. There is something deeply feminine about this season. Not because every woman must be the same, but because Samhain reminds me that I am allowed to be many things: gentle and fierce, vulnerable and strong, loving and untamed. I do not have to remain who I once was simply because others have grown accustomed to her. I am allowed to shed old identities, to reclaim the parts of myself I buried to be accepted, and to become a woman who belongs first to herself.
At Samhain, I think of the women who came before me. The mothers, grandmothers, and unknown women whose lives made mine possible. I honour their strength, their sacrifices, their dreams, and even their wounds. I do not need to romanticise their suffering or repeat their pain to honour their existence. I can carry their wisdom forward while choosing a different story for myself. I imagine lighting a candle for them, letting its small flame hold everything words cannot express. Gratitude. Grief. Love. The quiet understanding that we are never entirely separate from the lives that shaped us. And then I turn toward myself.
What am I ready to release? What have I outgrown? Where have I abandoned my own voice to keep the peace? What part of my soul is waiting for me to stop being afraid of my own power?
Samhain does not ask me to have all the answers. It asks me to be honest enough to sit with the questions. Perhaps that is the real magic of this night: not the promise that everything will change through a spell, but the sacred decision to participate in my own transformation. To write down what I am ready to leave behind. To speak an intention into the darkness. To sit beside a candle and remember that even when I cannot see what comes next, I can still trust myself to meet it. I do not fear the darkness as I once might have. I am learning that darkness is not always emptiness. Sometimes it is rest. Sometimes it is protection. Sometimes it is the womb of a new beginning, the quiet place where something within us gathers the strength to emerge.
This Samhain, I want to honour the woman I have been without remaining trapped in her story. I want to forgive myself for the times I did not know better, release what no longer nourishes me, and welcome the woman I am becoming with an open heart. I want to remember that my softness is not weakness, my intuition deserves to be heard, and my freedom is sacred. That I can love deeply without losing myself, honour the past without living inside it, and embrace the unknown without asking it to promise me safety. Because being a witch, to me, is not about escaping the world. It is about learning to inhabit it more consciously — with reverence for nature, respect for mystery, compassion for others, and an unwavering commitment to my own truth.
So let the leaves fall. Let the old versions of me rest. Let the ancestors be remembered, the grief be honoured, and the fire within me burn a little brighter. I do not need to become someone else. I only need to return to myself. This is Samhain for me: a sacred threshold, a conversation with the past, a gentle farewell to what has ended, and a promise to the woman I am still becoming.
May I walk into the darkness without losing my light. May I honour my roots without surrendering my freedom. And may I always remember that even in the deepest winter, the earth knows how to begin again.
Blessed Samhain. May the old fall away, may the soul find its way home, and may the witch within me always remember her power.
