Polka dots are so fun to wear and definitely add a graphic element to any ensemble, but maybe you’ve always wondered how they came to be—or where the name even originated from. For you curious fashion historians out there, they’ve actually been around for centuries, and (surprise!) the name comes from the polka dance.
Of course, polka dots are still around today, and they generally trend more during spring and summer months. And while the black-and-white combo might be the most classic and popular colorway, the print can work with any other hues. Recently I was in Puglia, Italy, to visit this amazing, tiny city called Alberobello and the trulli. Trulli (singular, trullo) are traditional dry stone huts with a corbelled roof. Their style of construction is specific to the Itria Valley in the region of Puglia. Trulli were generally constructed as temporary field shelters and storehouses or as permanent dwellings by small-scale landowners or agricultural labourers.
By virtue of the simplicity in design and construction of the trulli it has been possible to preserve their authentic form and decoration intact. The protection and management of the Trulli of Alberobello has a history extending from the beginning of the 20th century. The Trullo Sovrano was declared a national monument in 1923 and the Rione Monti in 1928. The property is protected under national cultural heritage legislation.
Alberobello is a small town full of life, happy and loud, but at the same times is magical and with mistery. The visitor who immerses himself in the narrow alleys of the ancient city of Alberobello is inevitably intrigued by the numerous lime symbols drawn on the bellies of the trulli cones. A cross, a monstrance, a Eucharistic chalice, the dove undoubtedly recall the Christian-Catholic cult, while a swastika cross and a seven-branched candelabrum refer to the most ancient Jewish religion. Some symbols have a double value, apotropaic and religious, such as the sun and the human eye, the eagle and the snake. Scissors and horseshoe are generally linked to popular superstition, in particular the peasant superstition still imbued with pagan rituals, despite the spread of Christianity which has slowly grafted onto many of those rituals.
Any prayer addressed to the pagan gods or to the god and saints of Christians for the protection of the domestic hearth belongs to all peoples of all times and from all walks of life.
