I realised yesterday as I was strolling through the mall that there is a common thread to all the shops, and it is the off-the-shoulder top. Women have been in love with this piece for a long time now, probably because it doesn’t require youth or any special attributes, anyone can wear it, it’s usually styled with jeans, we can wear it either to a cocktail party or to the beach, and it’s always handy. There are many variations of the piece and I’m not going to write about the extra short ones that are only appropriate for girls. So, the first thing to pay attention to is the length, because the top needs to be long enough to at least cover your belly button, if not longer. The reason? It’s a piece that usually pulls up on you, especially when the shoulder part is elastic.

Opt for frills and lace, and no, there is never too much of either! Cotton lace and cotton tops in general are gorgeous, because they seem so natural and summery. They are available in every single colour, we style them with jeans (and denim shorts, even denim skirts) or elegant trousers. Mind the contrast between the upper and lower part: off-the-shoulder tops are usually wide, so the pants should be slim; same goes for skirts (pencil skirt is the best option). Maxi skirts are nice as well, but be careful with pleated or midi skirts, because the result isn’t always optimal.

If you like the 70’s, you can opt for bell-bottoms, long ones and in combination with high heels; these don’t work for every woman, because they require a slim figure and a certain height. The whole look is going to have a vintage vibe, so I guess you have to be the right type of person to pull it off. Even Capri pants and shorts are a good choice, when you’re thinking about the beach or have flawless legs. If you prefer a crop top, style your off-the-shoulder top with a high-waisted pencil skirt for a sophisticated look.

It does have one pitfall, though: getting that straight-across neckline to stay put, without having to sacrifice your magnificent moves when the crowd favorite storms the stage.
