“I used to wear dresses like these, when I was young”, my mother said last week, when she came out of the store with a brand new, wonderful gingham dress. I started to think about how everything, without exception, comes around; even the retro fashion we see and admire right now, was here before, it was basically the same and not because of a lack of imagination, but simply, because a feminine style always works.
Polka dots and gingham have reigned over the summer, but what’s interesting is that these styles never age, they’re always wonderful and wearable, with a hint of country style. They go together amazingly well with frills and lace, so all the trends really form a lovely whole. The most beautiful, top pieces include blouses, maxi and midi dresses, as well a high waist shorts; the latter may not be for everyone, but they are always splendid.
Once you give yourself completely over to vintage style, you’ll realise you can also get away with thick framed sunglasses and red lipstick, because you’ll start enjoying the past-present-future style that we are sure to encounter again and again. Colours can be loud, from light and dark blue to red, but just as it is with nautical style, polka dots and Vichy look best when you do it subtly and opt for simplicity. Keep the accessories limited to leather or raffia, high sole shoes, or opt for the very elegant high heel sandals.
There has to be at least a bit of country style in you for the look to work, but never forget you are chic women, who find the right measure in everything they do.
