I believe we all have them in our closets, not only one but several versions of it: smooth, lace, men’s, cotton, silk, bow neck. I also believe that we all wear them with jeans, a suit, high waisted skirt, blazer or a statement necklace. In my opinion, a white shirt is so special precisely because it’s so multifunctional, and comes in so handy in times of over-stuffed wardrobes. Even though I may think I already know every possible way of wearing it, I can still find more ways that I also like. It remains my opinion that a men’s shirt looks best on bare skin with a lace bra peaking from underneath the fabric ‒ a deadly combination of the masculine and the feminine. But if you’re ever stuck not knowing what to actually wear, try the following.
White shirt at the office
Wear it with:
- black pants and long knitwear instead of a coat (offices are usually quite warm so you shouldn’t feel cold),
- jeans and a poncho or a furry vest,
- a high waisted skirt (black is a winner, you can also try dark blue or beige) or a pleated skirt (the shirt should be figure hugging in this instance, or even better a bodysuit blouse),
- wear jewellery with each combination: bangle bracelets, statement necklaces, large earrings.
White shirt for a date
Wear it with:
- underneath a sleeveless dress that isn’t too tight, or even better, made of wool. Other materials can be too sensitive, especially if it’s a cotton shirt.
- black or dark brown leather pants and sky high heels (pointed stilettos are a must, together with a clutch bag).
- A sequinned midi A-line skirt to give an air of etiquette that is slightly reminiscent of the 60’s. Another option is a lace knee-length skirt (not too short even if you’re going for the sexy look), it can be black to make that perfect black-and-white contrast.
- Accessories: high heels, a sequinned or metallic clutch bag, an updo hairstyle and large earrings. If you like to wear your shirt unbuttoned, play with lace lingerie in the same colour, namely white.
White shirt for your spare time
Wear it with:
- boyfriend jeans, black vest and ballet flats,
- skinny jeans and “IT” trendy sneakers (you can definitely play with a special model),
- underneath a sporty cotton T-shirt; it looks better if it isn’t a hoody, and has some fun writing or a message (they’re still so popular, especially the ones with season’s greetings and wishes)
- accessories: less is more. Let comfort be your guide, this is your spare time after all. About the bags: a backpack or a bucket bag are still my top choice.
