I don’t know about you, but I’m already on vacation mode even if I am still on the home front. I love to travel, for me it’s a way to broaden my horizons, meet different people and enjoy my time far away from home, as if living a parallel life. This summer is taking me to the United States again, but I would like to share some destinations with you that I especially appreciate or they simply got my attention. They’re not that far and the price is not that high, so they might give you an inspiration for a vacation idea, or at least a quick getaway not too far away from home, but still in a place filled with romance. And, as always, I wish you a wonderful summer.
Santorini, Greece
A picturesque, wonderful and romantic Greek island of Santorini is believed by many to be one of the most beautiful islands in the world. It’s part of the Cyclades and they say that you can see the most beautiful sunsets here. In the evenings, just before the sun sets in the sea, there is a marvellous rainbow of yellow, orange and red shades, as if it wanted to show to everybody visiting the island the most beautiful colours it glorifies. The sun shines on the rocky cliffs upon which cities are set, expecting the magical moment in the candle light, and the play of colours enchants every single visitor. And the sea? Turquoise and surrounded by wonderful beaches and white houses, with flowers everywhere, which are the island’s trademark. In my opinion, Santorini is like a postcard that you simply have to visit. The only downside is mass tourism that takes some of the charm away, so it’s best to visit in June or September, when it’s quieter.
Cinque Terre, Italy
Five lands, that’s the name of the picturesque Italian region, known for its breathtaking panoramas and food. If you desire a romantic trip with quiet walks, a glass of wine and enchanting nature, you’ll love this place. Even though it’s small, nature and man have succeeded hand in hand to create astonishing landmarks that have already captivated many travellers. The sea that has always washed the Ligurian shores, created many coves and scenic cliffs. The most beautiful among them are situated among the five charming villages that have become known as Cinque Terre or Five lands. It’s a world where mankind is made aware of its’ smallness in light of the immeasurable force of nature that shaped such an unforgettable landscape in this place.
Worthersee, Austria
Clean fresh water and neat swimming areas that covers children’s needs as well as those of the elderly. It’s a glacial lake, and the largest in Carinthia. There are many excellent hotels and small castles, some have great slow food options, and you can take walks around the lake (fashionistas are taken care of here) and surrounding nature in the evening, and drink cocktails in the candlelight. The most famous town here is the one that named the lake. The Worthersee resort with a castle and a prestigious casino called Velden, is located on the opposite side of the lake from Klagenfurt. Close to home and very, very nice.
Provence, France
It’s famous for the typical violet fields of lavender and being one of the most beautiful French regions. The Mediterranean Sea borders the region on the south, the Italian border on the east, the Alps on the north and the river Rhone on the west. Provence has inspired many artists, Cézanne, Matisse, Van Gogh and many others described themselves as its admirers. You should visit in July when the lavender is in full bloom, and I can tell you from personal experience that you can find the most beautiful romantic towns in the world here. Everything is so flawless, elegant and in such harmony with the colours of the environment, it might seem unreal at times. The food is excellent, of course, and the small rural inns in the middle of the fields are beautiful, with a private swimming pool and breakfast on the terrace. Unforgettable.
Korčula, Croatia
It isn’t an easy task, finding a Croatian island that is the most beautiful, suitable and perhaps “feminine”, but Korčula is special for many reasons. First of all, the beaches like Lumbarda are perfect for children. Then you have the fish, which you can eat everywhere, they’re always fresh and affordable, just like all the little coffee places, perfect to simply laze around without the internet, because being able to go completely off the grid is an important part of the summer. Culture lovers will be pleased to know there are beautiful palaces and cathedrals on the island, very much worth the visit.
