I was rummaging through my mom’s closet the other day and it was interesting to see how many beautiful clothes there were, and more importantly, how many useful ones. I found a variety of skirt trousers, which may be called culottes nowadays, but the cut is exactly the same. I was enchanted by her pleated skirts and respectable A-line dresses, and those with a cinched waist, as well as the little evening purses full of ??štras?? and crystals, all hand made and very, very lovely. I was enchanted by my mother – as a part of me rooted deep in my heart, her scent and the always perfectly ironed clothes, which she wears just like she did in the 1960’s. To me, she is simply perfect.
Luckily for me, my mom keeps everything tidy, ironed out and nicely smelling, and above all, she has a difficult time getting rid of old pieces and a great nose for buys that will last forever. Sometimes when she wears one of her dresses and I find her beautiful, she remarks: “You know, this dress is as old as you are.” In a time when everything comes and goes so quickly, I love her eternal pieces even more, and I do believe that your moms have similar things in their closets. Pieces that you will wear gladly, because they’re originally vintage and smell of your mother, which is the most beautiful thing in the world.
Padded blazers. If the shoulder pads are too big, remove them, but the fact is these blazers are very useful and will last forever, every mom has a few left from the 80’s, when they were a huge trend.
Nightgowns. I can still picture the one she lent me when I was in the last trimester of my pregnancy. It quickly became my favourite and even though I could get lost inside of it today, I still wear it sometimes. Mom’s nightgowns have a refined lace, are incredibly white and so very feminine.
High waisted jeans. You might be lucky enough to be about the same height as your mother, in which case the mom jeans will come in quite handy.
Beach dresses. They used to be made of rough cotton, just short enough, with big buttons and colourful. They are practically indestructible and very, very wearable, when you’re at the beach, of course. Wear it instead of a pareo, which is a much more refined look, in my opinion.
Classic leather bags. Still very trendy and of high quality, because leather is practically indestructible. The natural shades are mesmerising and I cannot decide, which bag is the most beautiful, I just want them all!
Evening purses. Very small, of course, glittery and very, very elegant. I can just imagine my mom at the dance, holding it in her hand, just as I do today. I have her snow white one, it could almost be a wedding purse, and I adore wearing it. And above all, it has good carma.
Classic little black dress. It always comes in handy and it’s always beautiful. There are many models, of course, but some are especially fun. So, if you’re lucky, your mom’s will be flawless and will completely enchant you.
Silk blouses. There are never enough! And our mothers always have a lot of silk in their closets; I found bow blouses and even an original YSL that really impressed me.
Jewellery. There are always rings, necklaces, bracelets and other pieces with their own unique history. This jewellery undoubtedly has its own energy and keeps with it a bit of our moms.
Pleated skirts. You will definitely get lucky here, because they’re all midi skirts, which is perfect. Pleats are always in, which is why your mom’s models are still trendy, plus they have the special charm of old pleats, which are simply flawless and gorgeous, I’m sure of it.
Long trench coats. The longer the better! Go for classical colours: camel, beige, black, dark blue or crème. Coats were considered a real investment in those days, and they’re a fashion jewel, so don’t be surprised that your mom still has them in her closet.
