Imagine living in Canada, somewhere along the shore a beautiful lake clad in wild colours, spectacular nature and the desire for freedom. Imagine wearing jeans and sneakers, a pompon hat, being wrapped in a plaid blanket, and a shirt that’s reminiscent of the blanket … Add a pinch of fashion savvy and playfulness, and voila, these are this year’s fall and winter trends. Plaid has such a strong presence that we simply cannot overlook it. Part of its’ charm, in my opinion, stems from the fact it’s been stolen from the men’s wardrobe. And when you style it with stripes, the perfect cocktail is ready!
It may seem at first glance that plaid and stripes will not be the best of friends, but, as I’m sure you know, contrasts are fashions’ favourite, and there are many combinations that we wouldn’t wear together at first. The important thing is to stay within a range of similar shades and not to mix too many colours. In my opinion, plaid pieces look best in dark blue, green or red, and the same holds true for stripes. You’ll achieve the best style by mixing similar shades. It requires sporty footwear, so invest in a pair of low boots or sneakers, because the relaxed country style or this atmosphere in general is at its’ best, when elegance is subdued. I still believe these pieces are quite wearable ‒ including blazers, coats and warm jackets. Jeans are another important element: a good pair of jeans paired with plaid and stripes compose a look that nobody will overlook.
Maxi skirts can also be extremely appealing: style them with basic knitwear, such as a high neck sweater. Feel free to wear sneakers or men’s style shoes, which are still in, to complete the look. As a general rule, the entire styling needs to be quite simple and basic, because plaid is calling us back to nature and compelling us to stay true to fashion’s basics. Stripes, as we know, have tailored fashion throughout history: nautical style is always very fashionable and will remain our go-to look, because it’s wearable, chic, and appropriate for any occasion. Considering we are always on the lookout for the right workplace outfit, the stripes and plaid combination is a good idea that continues to inspire. I suggest you join the expedition, and I guarantee you won’t regret it. The materials are warm and comfortable: wool, cashmere, lots of cotton or a mixture of everything; there is also some velvet, which is actually quite elegant, and yet a plaid shirt and a velvet blazer remain a top style.
There are quite a few pieces like this in my closet and I must say that they became an excellent alternative to the black or generally dark winter wardrobe. Because, you know, even a pretty pattern can bring us joy.
