If you’ve been wondering why there’s been a sea of the colour pink in town, that’s because fans are watching the movie Barbie that opened in cinemas on 20th July! Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the film centers around the life of Barbie and Ken dolls, Mattel’s top toy brands. The dolls are having the time of their lives until one day when they get the chance to go to the real world, they soon discover seeing life through rose-tinted glasses isn’t what it’s cut out to be. Whether the movie is up your alley or not, there is an influx of pink things that are flooding the market now as we speak.
The color of frivolity lives between red and white. Pink takes all the passion and energy of red and tempers it with the purity of white, leaving us with the color of tenderness and affection. Pink has been definitively linked to toning down aggression, and its use in holding cells for violent criminals has been quite effective. Some sports teams have even painted opposing teams locker rooms pink in an attempt to reduce aggression. Pink is such an effective mood regulator that too much of it can by physically draining. Dark pinks have effects similar to red–heightened emotions, while pale pinks are more soothing. It’s used as the symbolic color of the movement to support breast cancer research, and we think of pink as an innocent, cheerful color.
The screening of this Barbie movie comes at a time when sales of Barbie dolls have fluctuated after declining from 2012 until 2015 due to fierce competition from other doll products. The first Barbie doll, produced in 1959, was also considered unrealistic because of its overly perfect beauty standards, causing many little girls to feel that it is no longer relevant. To address this, Mattel diversified Barbie by creating other Barbies with varying skin colors and hair. With iconic brand Mattel finally bringing Barbie to he big screen, it is no surprise that the rebirth of all things pink has flown straight into the fashion world. While plenty will argue pink is a staple colour in every wardrobe, some might need guidance on how to style themselves and jazz up their wardrobe just as well as Barbie doll.
As you can see I am not at home these days, enjoying my free time on Miami Beach. Of course I have a lot of swimsuits with me, but the pink one, well, it is one of my favorite. A small tribute to Barbie and to the fact, that I am feeling really good!
