There comes a moment in life when you realize you don’t actually need more. Not another person, another plan, another achievement, another commitment, another thing to buy, organize, improve or prove. What you need is space. I’ve come to understand this slowly, and not always willingly. Because so much of what we are taught—especially as women—is built around accumulation. We collect roles, responsibilities, relationships, expectations, obligations. We collect things. We collect plans and projects and little promises we make to everyone around us. We fill our calendars, our homes, our minds. And somewhere along the way, we begin to believe that a full life must also be a crowded one.
I have a lot in my life. And I say that with gratitude, not apology. I have people I love, things I have built, memories I cherish, experiences I never want to take for granted. I have worked hard for many of the things that surround me. My life is full. And perhaps that is exactly why I have started to feel the need to make it simpler. Because even beautiful things can become too much. And when there is too much in front of us, we stop seeing clearly. That is what I have come to fear about accumulation—not having too much, but allowing the excess to obscure what matters. Too many relationships can leave too little room for the ones that are real. Too many conversations can drown out your own thoughts. Too many plans can make an ordinary, quiet day feel somehow unproductive. Too much noise can make it difficult to hear yourself.
So I’ve started asking myself a very simple question: Does this add something to my life, or does it simply take up space? The question has changed the way I look at things. There are relationships we maintain simply because they have been there for a long time. Conversations we keep having because they have become familiar. People we continue to make room for because we don’t know how to close the door. Routines we follow because they make us feel busy, even when they no longer make us feel alive. Objects we hold onto because they belong to a version of ourselves we have already outgrown. And then there are the thoughts. The old stories we keep telling ourselves. The expectations we inherited. The guilt we carry without remembering who gave it to us. The idea that we should always be doing more, giving more, achieving more, being more.
At some point, growing up becomes less about becoming someone new and more about having the courage to stop carrying what no longer belongs to you.
I’ve started letting things go. Not because I want less from life, but because I want to see more clearly. I’ve become more comfortable saying no. With not answering immediately. With not explaining every decision. With not being available to everyone. With leaving some things unresolved. With having an empty afternoon. With doing absolutely nothing and not feeling that I have wasted it. And perhaps most importantly, I’ve started asking myself how much of my life is truly necessary—and how much of it has simply become habit.
It’s an uncomfortable question because letting go means choosing. And choosing means accepting that you cannot keep everything. But maybe that is where a deeper kind of freedom begins. Not when you can have it all, but when you no longer feel that you need it all. For so long, we are taught to think of happiness as something we build by addition. Another accomplishment. Another trip. Another purchase. Another goal. Another version of ourselves to become. Then, quietly, something changes. You look around at the life you’ve built and realize that it doesn’t necessarily need improving. It needs your attention.
It needs you to be there for it. To notice the people you love. To sit at the table without checking your phone. To take a walk without turning it into a task. To enjoy a morning without needing it to lead somewhere. To have a conversation that isn’t about what comes next. I’ve started to believe that there is a particular kind of richness in this. Not the richness of having more, but the richness of having enough. Enough people you trust. Enough things you love. Enough work that matters. Enough beauty around you. Enough quiet to hear your own thoughts. Because when everything is competing for your attention, nothing really has it.
And I don’t want to live that way anymore. I don’t want every space in my life to be filled. I want some rooms to remain empty. Some afternoons unplanned. Some conversations unnecessary. Some silence untouched. Because empty space isn’t always absence. Sometimes it’s where clarity finally arrives. Maybe getting older is, in part, learning not to be afraid of what you leave behind. Learning that walking away doesn’t always mean losing. Sometimes it means making room for the person you have become. I have so much in my life. And I want to be careful with that abundance. I don’t want to let the things I have accumulate until they become the very things that prevent me from seeing what I have.
So I’m learning to edit my life. To keep what is meaningful. To release what is merely familiar. To protect what is real. To make room for silence. To choose presence over excess.
Because perhaps the greatest luxury isn’t having more. Perhaps it is reaching a point where you have enough—and finally feel free to let the rest go. And when you remove everything that was only making noise, what remains isn’t emptiness. It’s you.
